How to choose a sleeping bag

Form

Cocoon has a trapezoidal shape (in the shoulder area they are wider in the legs – already) and retains heat well. Most sleeping bags designed for cold temperatures, has the following form. However, compared to blankets, these sleeping bags are less convenient.

Blanket – has a rectangular shape (equal width throughout its length) and is more comfortable than a cocoon. A sleeping bag-blanket can be undone and used as a Mat or blanket. However, these sleeping bags retain heat worse and, therefore, poorly suited for low temperatures.

Appointment

Camping – is used for outings, picnics, easy Hiking, or similar activities when the weather is favorable. Basically has the shape of a blanket. Quite heavy.

Tracking (transitny) – a versatile option for the period from spring to autumn. Designed for long Hiking or Cycling tours. Has a small weight (under 3 kg). Sometimes, there are pure pure summer and winter models.

Extreme – is used in harsh weather conditions (winter expedition, Alpine climbing, etcD.) and is designed for negative temperature. These sleeping bags are equipped with hoods, thermal insulation zips and other accessories providing maximum insulation.

View

Universal is designed for the dimensions of an adult. To this type belong the majority of sleeping bags.

Child – differs from the universal in the smaller sizes. In some models you can adjust the length that the child could use the sleeping bag for several years.

Important: when the warm season child fit and adult sleeping bag in cold weather, should choose a special baby bag.

Female is different from universal additional warming in some places, appearance and lower temperature service, because the female body is more sensitive to cold than men.

Filler

Down – has excellent heat insulation properties and is well recovers its shape after compression (add a pen). However, in the case of moisture, fluff loses its properties and may even rot. Another drawback is that long dries. Not suitable for hot and humid climate. Widely used for making extreme sleeping bags.

Important: on the label the ratio of fluff/feather 80/20 essentially.

Synthetic – a cheaper and more practical option. In this case, there are many synthetic fillers, which differ from each other qualities and price.

Combined (down/synthetic) – a compromise between the two previous options, combining the insulating properties of down and the practicality of synthetics.

Type of filler

Goose – has good thermal insulation and light weight. Sleeping on this material – ideal for cold dry weather.

Sintepon – poorly absorbs moisture, dries quickly, has low price, but quickly become caked and worse retains heat. Padded sleeping bags suitable for Hiking and water Hiking in warm weather.

Silicone has good thermal insulation even in wet conditions. These sleeping bags are light weight, easy to clean (silicone does not decay, has no odor, does not cause allergies, does not crumple in the wash). Also the silicone is able to restore its shape and volume after compression. Stands up well to multiple washing and dry cleaning.

Cotton – is inexpensive, does not cause allergies, but strongly absorbs moisture and gets heavy. Is rare and used only for Hiking short distances.

Hollowfiber – the polyester basis. Dries quickly, has good insulating properties. Eco-friendly material, non-flammable, withstands wet conditions. This bag is suitable for water tours.

Thinsulate Lite Loft an optimal balance between good thermal insulation and low weight.

Polarguard, Polarguard 3D – soft, lightweight and durable material, but quite heavy.

Thermoloft-6 – does not absorb moisture and elastic. Don't take up much space in a Packed form.

Micro-loft – offers maximum elasticity and thermal insulation properties. By fluffiness is coming to down. Antiallergenic.

Thermolite – durable, warp-resistant and warm enough material.

Primaloft – is the same fluff, but it does not lose volume and insulating properties when wet. Durable and lightweight material that can withstand the most severe weather conditions.

QualloFIL – combines good elasticity and insulation at a low weight. Sleeping bags with this filler are used in extreme conditions.

Lining

Nylon is the most common. Durable and breathable material.

Polyester – is used much less frequently.

Cotton – is rare. Pleasant to the touch and does not cause allergies.

Layers of insulation

is the number of layers of synthetic insulation, as not layers. As a General rule, the more layers the better will be the heat insulation properties of a sleeping bag. However, along with the number of layers, it is important to consider the type of filler and thickness of the individual layer.

comfort Temperature

Maximum temperature – the maximum temperature at which people can comfortably sleep with an open sleeping bag.

Minimum temperature – the minimum temperature at which people can comfortably sleep in a sleeping bag buttoned

the Maximum comfort temperature ranges from -20 to 30 °C, the minimum is -49 °to 25 ° C

Important: it should be remembered that the comfort temperature also depends on the characteristics of the body, sex and clothing, in which a man sleeps, humidity, wind, etcD.

Extreme temperature – the lowest temperature at which it is possible to use the sleeping bag in a locked position without the risk of hypothermia. It ranges from -80 to 15 °C.

Dimensions

Length

Children's – up to 170 cm

Adults – up to 230 cm

to choose the right sleeping bag, the length needs to be 15-20 cm above the full height of a man (hooded) or the height of a man to the chin (without hood). This is necessary to avoid tearing of the bag when moving or turning the person in the bag during sleep.

Height (thickness) varies from 16 to 40 cm.

This index should be such that the man felt comfortable to roll over and put his hands inside the sleeping bag.

Width

the model of the "cocoon" are two values width – the width in feet (from 30 to 168 cm) and width of the shoulders (from 35 to 170 cm). Acceptable width in the legs will be one in which the material of the bag is not stretched (avoid heat loss), if to bend the legs. Width for the shoulders (a blanket or cocoon) is determined by the ease of movement inside the sleeping bag.

Important: should hold the balance between spaciousness and warmth. Too wide and short sleeping bag will not protect from the cold (catch a cold), too narrow will cause discomfort.

Weight

the Weight does not play a significant role if there is no need to wear in a long time (e.g., trailering). Average tracking weighs between 1.3 to 2.7 kg. Sleeping bag designed for warm, dry weather – up to 1 kg, for winter hikes (blanket) – 3 kg.

note that warmer usually heavier than their counterparts, and from models with the same thermal insulation properties, lighter will cost more.

Equipment

Hood – to protect the head and neck from cold, keeps the heat inside of a sleeping bag. There is no off-season and winter sleeping bags.

  • Detachable hood is a type of hood that is different from the usual that if necessary it can detach from the bag (for example, in warm weather).
  • Anatomical – a special cut of the hood closely fitted to the head (temples, ears, forehead). Is on the edge of the plate protecting against penetration of cold.

Costaguana model – allows you to use special lightning to connect a number of sleeping bags in one bench. This helps to better retain heat. For this purpose it is recommended to choose the same model of sleeping bags to match the type of zipper.

Insulated zipper – a special lane (valve), located along the zipper. Protects against the penetration of cold through the zipper – the weaknesses of the sleeping bag. Especially important for trekinogovyh and extreme models.

Two runner – double zipper allows you to create a ventilation hole in any part of the sleeping bag (for legs etcD.).

Protection against jamming of a lightning – a special way the tape is located between the dog and the teeth of the zipper. Protects the zipper from jamming. Increases ease of use of a sleeping bag, and in an extreme situation gives a possibility to get out of the sleeping bag.

Pockets allow you to store valuables, money, documents and soD. Located in the inner side of the sleeping bag, fastened with a zipper.

Compression bag – allows to considerably reduce the size of a sleeping bag during transport and to save space in your backpack. It should be noted that if a sleeping bag will be in a compression bag for a long period of time, the filler can be Packed and lose their insulating properties. Storage sleeping bags simple bag (mesh)

Stretchy knit section – make it possible to fill the sleeping bag as a pillow, without damaging the bags of insulation.

super luminova loop a special loop located at the "dog" zipper with insert, luminous in the dark. It is easy to find the zipper at night.

Department under your pillow – a special pocket in the head area, designed to cushion, prevent damage of a sleeping bag.

Insulation for feet – a special section in the area of the legs with reinforced padding allows the feet to warm up fast.

Thermal collar – the roller located in the neck. Protects from entry of cold air that helps the neck and head faster to keep warm.

drying Loops – allow you to hang your sleeping bag on a hook, a branch for cleaning, airing or drying. They are located in the leg end of the sleeping bag.
